Sharing Session: More Sound residency by Vilbjørg Broch
Sharing session of the residency outcomes by Vilbjørg Broch.
5 February 2026, at 14:00, Location: VR/Sound Lab
The residency focuses on the interrelation of space, time, and frequency in the spatial audio format ambisonics. examining their inseparability both through mathematical analysis and lived experience. Broch has the past decade made works in algorithmic spatial audio creating her own tools. Algebraic and geometric structures, their transformations and projections onto 3D, have informed spatialization and spatial synthesis.
During the residency, recordings will be made with spatial microphones at IAC. This material will be used in an exploration towards methods of transformation. A question raised is: in which ways will it be possible to re-imagine the perception of time, space, and sound? Extensions into mathematical transformations in higher-dimensional frameworks, can serve as tools for unexpected artistic results.
This project represents the beginning of a larger artistic inquiry with vast possibilities. While mathematics provides many of the technical means, the process of tuning and navigating transformation systems is approached as a poetic and artistic endeavour.
The sharing session will offer insight into these initial explorations and invite the audience to experience the residency’s results.
Vilbjørg Broch (* 1967) has a background in postmodern dance, improvisation and vocal performance. Her studies include School for New Dance Development, Amsterdam and more than a decade by coloratura soprano Marianne Blok. Vilbjørg worked with computer music for around 20 years and from the onset she saw a possibility and necessity for applying new mathematics in the field. Therefore, the study of pure mathematics alongside audio DSP has been ongoing through the last years. The work with spatial audio has especially developed thanks to working periods and residencies at CCRMA Stanford, IEM Graz, NOTAM Oslo, EMS Stockholm, ICST Zurich. Vilbjørg Broch is based in Denmark after several decades in Holland.
More Sound Residency
More Sound is a residency programme in collaboration with the Danish Composers’ Society / Dansk Komponistforening and is financed by funds from Koda Kultur. A residency for Danish composers and sound-based artists who work with experimental music and/or sound-based art.
More Sound Residency has one annual application deadline. Next deadline: 1 May 2026
