The artistic doctoral programmes are based on artistic knowledge and artistic work. The emphasis of the studies is on independent artistic work within the framework of an artistic research project with the aim of developing knowledge of artistic issues.

Music education as a field of research is interdisciplinary in nature and uses theories and methods from, for example, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, musicology and artistic research to understand and explain music education phenomena. 

Announcement of positions

The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts has a limited number of PhD positions in each doctoral subject. Vacancies for doctoral positions are advertised on Lund University’s and the Faculty's websites. The text of the announcement specifies the requirements for the content of the application. An application must contain the following:

• personal data: name, nationality, date of birth, address and e-mail address
• Research plan
• Appendices to be attached to the application (e.g. diploma)
• Summary of qualifications

The announcement will also contain information regarding the subject of the doctoral programme, the closing date for applications, the number of doctoral positions announced as well as the expected starting date of the studies.

Application

Applications for the doctoral programme must be submitted electronically, in accordance with the instructions in the announcement text. Physical work sample should be sent by post to the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts.

Eligibility for doctoral studies

Basic eligibility

Basic eligibility for doctoral studies is open to those who have:

• completed a degree at the advanced level, and
• completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, including at least 60 credits at the advanced level, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge (real competence) by some other means within or outside Sweden.

Specific qualifications

The requirements for specific qualifications are specified in the General Syllabus for each doctoral subject.

Admission process

Applications will be assessed by an admissions committee appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts on the proposal of the department concerned; Malmö Academy of Music, Malmö Theatre Academy or Malmö Art Academy. The committee consists of at least the subject director, a doctoral student representative and an external representative. Commonly a supervisor in the subject also forms part. 

The admissions committee first checks the applicants’ eligibility and those assessed eligible are ranked (the highest ranked may also be invited for interview). The selection is based on the department's specialisation and supervisor resources, as well as an assessment of the applicants' ability to assimilate the education. This assessment will take into account the research plan, merit documents, any work samples and other documents submitted by the applicants.

Note: a requirement to be accepted is that the applicant can be employed as a doctoral student or has acquired some other form of study funding

The decision on admission is made by the Board of the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts and is notified in writing to all applicants. Regulations concerning doctoral education and access to doctoral education can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, chapters 6 and 7, as well as in Lund University’s Admissions Regulations for postgraduate education (STYR 2021/2700) valid from 2022-06-14.
