Other tongues | A singing and scoring session with Richy Carey
There is not a word I speak that has not been given to me by somebody else, or a word that you speak that has not been brought to you by somebody else. Alison Phipps.
Registration: Please use the following form to register for the workshop by 11 May 2026 at the latest.
Join us for a singing a scoring workshop where we will collectively create and perform our own postcard-sized text and graphic scores.
Thinking about ways of sending and receiving sound and meaning through the form of postcards, we will explore ways of making music for voices that anyone can take part in, and in doing so discuss some of the ideas around listening and language, movement and migration, correspondence and co-responding that are emerging through Richy’s research residency at the IAC.
We will look at postcard scores by composers such as Pauline Oliveros, James Tenney and Carey, before making our own and performing them together, and as we do think about the need for indeterminacy, improvisation and play in nurturing polyvocal, non-hierarchical futures.
The workshop is part of a new body of work Richy is composing as part of his IASPIS residency in Malmö, titled other tongues, through which he is developing a new series of scores that will be collated into a publication, and a corresponding multichannel sound installation.
