Open lecture: Eadweard Muybridge and the problem of photographic stillness

Welcome to an open lecture with Sara Callahan at Malmö Art Academy.
Sara will present the 19th century photographer Eadweard Muybridge, focusing specifically on his series Animal Locomotion. When these images were first published they reignited an age-old debate about how to depict life, which is characterized by movement, in a medium that itself did not move. Muybrige’s work became the center of critique about notions of time, but have also stirred discussions about the depiction of women, race and disease in 19th century photography, as well as the very idea of what photography is and should be. Muybridge’s work has been immensely influential in the century and a half since they were made. She will touch on some of the ways in which his work has been referenced among conceptual artists in the 1960s and 70s, as well as within more reccent art and popular culture.
