Lending an Ear – Sebastian Poras Adolfsson

What does it mean to hear and what does listening require?

During this past year, I’ve dwelled on and questioned how sound and the act of listening ties us to one another and to our surroundings held in common. And at the same time, how listening can act as a separation or an absence. As a doubt, a hesitation and a yearning for the communal. By focusing on sound as a social material in constant flux, that’s affecting, finding its way reverberating, and falling apart; the exhibition tries to bring attention to listening as a practice. To think more broadly about what it means to hear and be heard in these upsetting times.

The exhibition moves from one place to another, following the line between land and sea. To end up looking inward, to what it means to have a voice. From the movement of our feet, to the reach of our ears, through field recording composition, voice, text and installation, the exhibition Lending an Ear tries to explore how our senses bind us to our surroundings and constantly shape our perception of places, memories, and experiences.

Sebastian Poras Adolfsson is a visual artist born in 1994 in Bogotá, Colombia. He grew up in Umeå, received a BA from Umeå Academy of Fine Arts in 2020, and is now based in Malmö.
